Additional Details

May Enhance Wound Healing:

Since Ancient Greece, Achillea has been used in poultices and ointments for treating wounds.
A study found that extracts from Achillea leaves exhibited anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, both of which aid in wound healing.
Additionally, this study noted that Achillea leaf extract may increase fibroblasts, the cells responsible for regenerating connective tissue and helping the body recover from injury.
Meanwhile, a two-week study involving 140 women observed that an ointment containing this herb and Hypericum helped heal episiotomy wounds—surgical incisions in the vaginal wall made during childbirth.

May Relieve Digestive Issues:

Achillea has long been used to treat digestive problems such as ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), symptoms of which include stomach pain, diarrhoea, bloating, and constipation.
In fact, this herb contains numerous flavonoids and alkaloids, plant compounds known to relieve digestive issues.
One study found that a tonic extract of Achillea protected against stomach acid damage and exhibited anti-ulcer properties.
Another study determined that the flavonoid antioxidants in Achillea infusion may counteract digestive spasms, inflammation, and other IBS symptoms.

May Help Reduce Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety:

The flavonoids and alkaloids in Achillea infusion may relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Research shows that plant-derived alkaloids, such as those found in Achillea infusion, reduce corticosterone secretion—a hormone elevated during chronic stress.
One study found that an Achillea tincture, administered orally, reduced anxiety and promoted daily mental and physical activity.

May Support Brain Health:

Achillea has been shown to benefit certain brain disorders, including multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and encephalomyelitis—an inflammation of the brain and spinal cord caused by viral infection.
A recent study noted that Achillea extract reduced the severity of encephalomyelitis, as well as inflammation in the brain and damage to the spinal cord and brain.
Furthermore, a study found that the antioxidants in Achillea exhibit anticonvulsant effects, making this herb a promising treatment for individuals with epilepsy.
Additional studies suggest that this plant may help prevent symptoms of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, such as memory loss and motor impairment.

About the Herb

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is a flowering herb in the Asteraceae (daisy) family, widely distributed across temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including North America, Europe, and Asia. It is known by several names, including milfoil, soldier’s woundwort, old man’s pepper, and devil’s nettle. In Australia and New Zealand, it is sometimes cultivated as livestock fodder due to its hardy nature.

The name Achillea is derived from the Greek hero Achilles, who, according to legend, used yarrow to treat the wounds of his soldiers during battle. This historical association highlights the plant’s long-standing use in traditional medicine, particularly for wound healing and anti-inflammatory purposes. Ancient civilizations, including the Greeks, Romans, and Chinese, recognised yarrow’s medicinal value, using it in poultices, infusions, and salves for a variety of ailments.

Beyond its medicinal applications, yarrow has been steeped in folklore and mysticism. It was often carried as a charm for protection and used in divination practices. Some traditions believed that hanging yarrow in homes could ward off negative energy, while others used it in love spells to bring clarity and harmony to relationships.

Today, yarrow continues to be valued in herbal medicine for its ability to support digestion, aid wound healing, and promote brain and nervous system health. Whether used as an herbal infusion, tincture, or topical treatment, it remains a powerful natural remedy with a rich history of healing and protection.
