Skin Healing Properties

The most well-known and historically significant use of Calendula is for skin healing, treating wounds, burns, rashes, itching, bites, and swelling.
Studies suggest that Calendula promotes the growth of healthy new tissue, increases blood flow to the affected area, boosts collagen production (which tightens and strengthens the skin), hydrates dry skin, and accelerates skin repair after surgery or injury.

The ability of Calendula to aid wound healing is believed to be linked to its stimulation of epithelial cell production (the cells forming the body's outer surface), primarily due to the presence of glycoproteins and nucleoproteins. It is also associated with an increased cellular turnover and enhanced collagen metabolism.

Natural Antiseptic / Anti-inflammatory

During the First World War and the American Civil War, Calendula was used as an antiseptic for wounds.
Its primary compounds are triterpenoids, considered the most important anti-inflammatory and anti-oedematous (swelling-preventing) components of the plant.

Another well-researched application of Calendula extract is its use as ear drops to help treat bacterial ear infections and reduce pain. Studies have shown that these drops can reduce swelling and inflammation in the inner ear within just a few days of use.

Antioxidant Properties

Calendula oil is an excellent source of antioxidants.
This vibrant orange and yellow oil is rich in carotenes and carotenoids—the compounds responsible for the plant’s bright colour. These phytochemicals act as precursors to the production of the antioxidant vitamin A.

Conjunctivitis / Eye Inflammation

Calendula extract is effective in treating conjunctivitis and other inflammatory eye conditions.
It exhibits antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and immune-boosting properties, which have been shown to help reduce eye infections.
Additionally, these extracts help protect vision by shielding the delicate tissues of the eye from ultraviolet radiation and oxidative damage.

Sore Throat / Mouth Ulcers

Due to its antimicrobial and antiseptic properties, Calendula is an effective remedy for sore throat, gingivitis, tonsillitis, and mouth ulcers.
Gargling with Calendula tea can soothe throat mucosa and relieve pain.

About the Herb

Marigold (Calendula officinalis), also known as pot marigold, is a vibrant flowering plant belonging to the Asteraceae (daisy) family. Although its precise origins remain uncertain, it is believed to be native to southern Europe and has been widely cultivated as both an ornamental and medicinal plant. Today, marigold thrives in temperate regions across the world, including parts of northern Europe.

For centuries, marigold has been valued for its healing properties. In ancient times, it was used by the Greeks and Romans in skin treatments, while medieval herbalists praised its wound-healing and anti-inflammatory benefits. During the American Civil War and World War I, marigold flowers were commonly applied to wounds to prevent infections due to their natural antiseptic properties.

Beyond its medicinal applications, marigold has been an essential component in traditional rituals and folklore. It was often associated with protection and positivity, with some cultures using marigold garlands in celebrations and ceremonies. Additionally, the plant’s striking yellow and orange petals have been historically used as a natural dye for fabrics and food colouring.

Today, marigold remains a staple in herbal medicine and skincare, widely used in creams, oils, and teas to support skin health, reduce inflammation, and promote overall well-being. Its bright blossoms continue to be cherished in gardens, not only for their beauty but also for their ability to attract beneficial pollinators and naturally repel pests.
