A Powerful Source of Therapeutic Compounds
Lemon verbena, also known in the scientific community as Lippia citriodora, Aloysia citriodora, and Aloysia triphylla, is a medicinal plant native to South America.
It contains several plant compounds, including terpenoids and phenolic compounds, which possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. For example, its leaves and extract are rich in a polyphenol compound called verbascoside. Research, both past and recent, indicates that this compound has strong antioxidant activity.
Studies suggest that verbascoside may protect against cellular damage and enhance the body's antioxidant defences. In addition to verbascoside, lemon verbena contains various other plant compounds with antioxidant properties, such as geraniol, neral, luteolin, and limonene.
Reduces Anxiety
The antioxidant properties of this herb have a notable impact on hormonal balance in the body.
Lemon verbena has a calming and soothing effect, which can help reduce stress levels and relieve anxiety.
May Reduce Inflammation and Oxidative Stress
Due to its abundance of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, lemon verbena may help lower inflammation and oxidative stress in the body.
Oxidative stress is characterised by an imbalance between the body's antioxidant defences and the production of harmful free radicals. This imbalance can lead to cellular damage and an increased risk of disease.
Improves Joint Function
The primary active compound in this plant, verbascoside, is responsible for many of its health benefits. This powerful anti-inflammatory compound has been studied in combination with omega-3 fatty acids and has shown promise as a treatment for joint pain.
A study involving 45 participants who took lemon verbena supplements along with fish oil found positive results in reducing joint pain.
Supports the Immune System
One of the most significant benefits of lemon verbena is its impact on the immune system.
Oxidative stress affects free radical activity and their overall presence in the body. Lower oxidative stress levels have been linked to better overall health and improved immune function.
About the Herb
Lemon verbena (Aloysia citrodora), a member of the Verbenaceae family, is a fragrant perennial shrub native to South America. It was introduced to Europe in the 17th century by Spanish and Portuguese explorers, where it quickly became valued for its aromatic leaves and medicinal benefits.
This herb is characterised by its glossy, lance-shaped leaves that release a distinct lemon fragrance when crushed. It can grow up to 2–3 metres (7–10 feet) tall and produces delicate purple or white flowers in late spring or early summer. While it remains evergreen in tropical climates, it is sensitive to cold and sheds its leaves when temperatures drop below freezing.
Historically, lemon verbena has been used in traditional medicine for its calming and digestive properties. It was widely cultivated for its essential oil, which has been used in perfumery, herbal teas, and therapeutic remedies. In addition to its medicinal uses, lemon verbena has been a popular culinary herb, often added to desserts, beverages, and herbal infusions for its refreshing citrus-like flavour.
Today, lemon verbena remains a valued herb in natural medicine, known for its antioxidant-rich compounds that support relaxation, immune function, and overall well-being. Its pleasant aroma and diverse health benefits make it a staple in both herbalism and aromatherapy.
