About the Herb

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), also known as German chamomile, belongs to the Asteraceae (daisy) family and is one of the most widely used medicinal herbs in traditional and modern herbal medicine. It is closely related to Anthemis nobilis (Roman chamomile), another commonly used variety.

Chamomile has been revered for centuries for its soothing and healing properties. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans all recognised its medicinal benefits, using it to treat fevers, digestive issues, and nervous conditions. In medieval Europe, chamomile was a staple remedy in monastic medicine, often prescribed for its calming and anti-inflammatory effects.

The herb’s name derives from the Greek khamai-melon, meaning “earth apple,” referring to its apple-like fragrance. Traditionally, chamomile was also used in spiritual and protective rituals, with some cultures believing that it attracted prosperity and warded off negativity.

Today, chamomile remains a popular herbal remedy, particularly as a tea for relaxation and sleep support. Its gentle yet effective properties make it a staple in natural medicine for digestive health, immune support, and skin care, continuing its long history as a beloved and therapeutic herb.
